3D Printing is Years Away from Transforming Supply Chains

(Forbes) The challenges in additive manufacturing (AM) are surmountable, writes Steve Banker. Integration of 3D printing will take a commitment from the industry and for some, that could take up to a decade. Banker cites current AM technology limitations and points out how required process knowledge is nontrivial. As an example of the time commitment, GE took over 10 years to refine the company’s additive manufacturing process. Using a laser sintering process from the outset the challenges were multifold. In additive manufacturing the structural properties of the finished product are highly dependent upon the formulation of the metal powder and the operating parameters of the laser sintering machine. This required seminal research in both these areas to be accomplished simultaneously.

ORNL and Cincinnati, Inc. Partnership May Disrupt Leadership Positions in 3D Printing

(Daily Finance) Beth McKenna writes that the recent partnership agreement between Oak Ridge National Laboratories and Cincinnati, Inc. could have the potential to disrupt the leadership positions of 3D Systems Corporation and Stratasys. She believes the new partnership could provide company for ExOne and Arcam in the industrial niche of the 3D printing sector and prove to be competition for voxeljet in the large build-box space.  McKenna advises that investors in all five of the pure-play, publicly traded 3D printer manufacturers (i.e. 3D Systems Corporation, Stratasys, ExOne, Arcam and voxeljet) monitor this project. This ORNL-Cincinnati Inc. partnership addresses two primary hurdles that are holding back 3D printing from making faster inroads into mass manufacturing applications: production speed and size of components that can be made.

Thanks for visiting us at Rapid Pro 2014

We have always believed (and still do) that people feel the need to express themselves, more than ever before, in a world where standardization seems to be the rule. Just returning from this year’s Rapid Pro, the annual 3D printing event in the Netherlands, it’s always great to see that people are looking for original ways to add personal touches to their lives, to differentiate themselves, and to make the world around them a little bit more their own.

Over the past 2 days, we have met and spoken to hundreds of people interested in the possibilities of 3D printing. It doesn’t matter if you’re a teacher, a student, a designer, an artist or an entrepreneur; our online 3D printing service is accessible to all of you.

Wim Verstraeten, our Business Process Manager, gave a workshop on “How to boost your business with the i.materialise APIs” and was overwhelmed by the number of people in attendance. Though every seat was taken, all of you who attended didn’t seem to mind squeezing in to join. If you are thinking about setting up a 3D printing related business, we hoped we have inspired you to take the next step.

For those who couldn’t attend, we took some photos of the booth before the doors opened and the crowds took over – and what an enthusiastic crowd it was. Enjoy and we hope to see you again in the future!
