3D Printed Artery Models Developed to Combat Heart Disease

By Tyler Koslow

3D printed anatomical models have been used in hospitals all over the world to help aid surgeons with complex procedures, proving to be one of the most significant uses of 3D printing technology in the medical field. One team of medical and engineering researchers from Australia’s University of Melborne, led by Associate Professor Peter Barlis, are combining this concept of 3D printed anatomical models with a unique scanning process, creating patient-specific 3D printed artery models that not only represent the shape, but also the issues within a patient’s heart.…

Stratasys Gives Massivit 3D’s Massive 3D Printing Techn a Big Boost

By Tyler Koslow

There’s been a lot of buzz building up around the Israel-based 3D printing company Massivit 3D, who have taken large-scale 3D printing to the next level with their unique technology and a printing volume of 1200 x 1500 x 1800 mm. Massivit 3D showcased their 3D printing capabilities recently by printing a two meter shark for the Silence of the Sharks campaign, a demonstration against the hunting of these majestically viscous sea creatures. And, while they were busy helping to save the sharks, it seems that the 3D printing giant Stratasys had taken notice of Massivit 3D’s large-scale 3D printing technology (perhaps from the window of Stratasys’ own Israel HQ!).…

Bioprinting Breakthrough: Researchers 3D Print Living Tissue for Functional Implants

By Tyler Koslow

Of all the different industries that 3D printing technology is set out to revolutionize, not many have been impacted the way that the medical field has been through bioprinting. Still in a relatively early stage of innovation, scientists and researchers across the globe have been working to develop and 3D print biocompatible material to improve the health of the human body. From ‘bioficial’ 3D printed thyroid implants to a functional 3D printed eardrum, it seems that bioprinting takes a progressive step forward on a constant basis.…

The 3D Printing Business Directory: Compiling Everything 3D Printing into One List

By Tyler Koslow

3D printing companies and service providers are exponentially popping up all around the world in all different shapes and styles (and prices, too!). Whether it’s through software or hardware, consumer or industrial, FDM or SLS, one of the things that all of the world’s 3D printing companies certainly share is their involvement in a revolutionary technology. But as 3D printing companies and products continue to expand internationally, they are becoming increasingly spread out and hard to keep track of. The 3D Printing Business Directory, founded by Davide Sher, is here to compile all of these related companies and service providers into a one clear and concise business directory.…

The 3D Printed Mechanical Chameleon that Knows When to Go Camo

By Tyler Koslow

It seems that some pretty cool news snuck by most of the world last month in the scientific journal ACS Nano. Perhaps it’s because it involves an actual camouflaging mechanical chameleon!

The research, which was conducted by a collaborative team from China’s Wuhan University and the Atlanta-based Georgia Institute of Technology, was aimed at reaching ‘optical invisibility’ by covering a 3D printed chameleon model in a plasmonic display. What these plasmons (aka ripples of electrons) allow for is real-time light manipulation that adapts to the color of the surrounding environment.…
