3D Systems Entering Mass Production with Project Ara

(3DPrintingStocks) Project Ara is Google’s mission to “reinvent the smartphone.” In essence, Google is launching a completely modular phone, allowing consumers full customization of features for their individualized phone. The project has obvious potential for sales of millions of these phones and 3D Systems will be manufacturing the modules for Google via 3D printing. This will not be prototypes or small test runs, but large-scale manufacturing via 3D printing. 3D Systems gave an update last week and explained that they are creating a continuous, high-speed 3D printing production platform and fulfillment system to accommodate production-level speeds and volume.

3D Systems & Google’s Android Team Will Develop Project Ara Smartphone

(Daily Finance) Google will sell most of its Motorola division to Lenovo for $2.91 billion. However, Google will keep the best parts of Motorola for itself, including the “vast majority” of its patent portfolio, as well as the group that houses the Project Ara smartphone. Project Ara, housed within Motorola’s advanced technology group, is Motorola’s fully customizable modular handset concept that has big dreams of revolutionizing how the world buys smartphones. In November 2013, Motorola announced a multi-year partnership with 3D Systems to develop a continuous, high-speed 3D printing production platform and fulfillment system to support Project Ara’s needs. With a deeper level of integration than ever before, Project Ara has an even better chance of realizing its full potential with 3D Systems playing a critical role.
