Oak Ridge National Labs 3D Prints Efficient Inverter for Electric Cars

(OilPrice.com) — The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratories reports that its scientists used unusual semiconductors and 3D printing to create an inverter, which transforms electric current from the car’s battery into the alternating current needed by the motor. ORNL scientists have developed a lighter, stronger, and more efficient power inverter that could… View Article

ORNL & Local Motors Partner to Produce World’s First 3D Printed Vehicle

(Oak Ridge National Laboratory) Local Motors, Inc. and Oak Ridge National Laboratory have signed a new partnership to develop and deliver technology to produce the world’s first production 3D printed vehicle. The project will make use of equipment at DOE’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. The cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) between Local Motors and ORNL, will explore making vehicle construction more efficient, including: lower production time, costs, and part count, coupled with higher standards of control, safety, aesthetics and mechanical flexibility.
