True 3D infill has arrived

Type A Machines has announced a new method for producing true three-dimensional infill of a 3D part that should improve the overall strength and uniformity of almost every 3D structure that isn’t a simple solid. Absolute Dimensions and 3D Internal Structures are separate innovations that work in tandem to replace the old system of infill. Before now, percentages were used to specify the density of a printed part at any given point. This has produced inconsistent results and there are greater issues, too. Infill is produced with a layer on layer printing method, which is inherently two-dimensional. This means there are inevitably mechanical differences in tensile strength, resistance and other properties depending on the angle and orientation. The only way to compensate for this is to over engineer the part, which can add weight and cost. Cura Type A relies on actual physical measurements in millimeters, rather than percentages. This is a definite move in the right direction and it also turns the ‘infill’ into a functional part of the 3D printed object, rather than an unpredictable variable and a by-product. By creating a true Isotropic, tessellating lattice structure, the infill can provide most of the product’s strength. It also regulates print times and produces a more consistent finished part. “Thinking of a part’s internal geometry as infill is to fundamentally misunderstand the role of internal structure in a 3D printed […]

SLM Solutions scoops prestigious award

SLM Solutions has scooped an award for outstanding innovation from the German trade journal MM Maschinenemarkt. The Lubeck-based company produces Selective Laser Melting systems and is a global leader in the metal-based additive manufacturing business. In February, trade journal MM Maschinenmarkt honoured the company in its Trend Topics section at its annual gala at the Wurzburg Vogel Convention Centre.  200 guests, including the leading lights of the industry, turned out for the prestigious awards ceremony. The business respects the awards because they are far more than an annual handout and a party. Judges from the journal carefully analyse the companies involved and judge the contribution they have made to the industry, the environment and society as a whole. Then they open up the voting to the readers and this year more than 10,000 votes counted towards the final result. It meant a lot to Hans Joachim Ihde, chairman of the Board of the SLM Solutions Group AG. He said: “The entire SLM Solutions team is very happy. The award confirms our efforts to go beyond the mere development of highly innovative machines and systems. In cooperation with our employees and partners we create solutions for our customers; solutions that are now possible through the new SLM technology. However, during the entire creative process we always keep the holistic view of the processes in mind. “We combine the industry and application expertise […]

MatterHackers brings the nerd to the Maker Faire

MatterHackers will bring out the big guns at this year’s Maker Faire Bay Area at the San Mateo Events Center on May 20-22nd. You can high five YouTube’s 3D Printing Nerd Joel Telling and authors Joan Horvath and Rich Cameron will be on the stand to sign copies of their new book: ‘3D Printed Science Projects’. The latest e-NABLE assistive device model and the MasterControl Touch 3D printer controller will also be on display. MatterHackers will be able to talk interested people through the e-NABLE Hub, which helps people buy the right printer, filament and accessories for any specific project. The online resource now has a vast array of instructional guides, articles and videos, which are fronted by Telling. Meet the 3D Printing Nerd The 3D Printing Nerd has amassed quite an audience since launching his Youtube channel last year. More than 25,000 people have subscribed to his channel and his most popular video has more than 100,000 views. He has joined forces with MatterHackers to help with the instructional videos and now he’ll take centre stage at the Maker Faire. Fans can come and meet Joel at the show to trade a digital high five for a real one. Horvath and Cameron will sign and give away copies of their book that is based on science and math projects that are designed to be 3D printed. It’s an interesting […]
