REAL 2016: Airbus & Autodesk Demonstrate Why Generative Design Equals Efficient Design

Not many industries have felt the force of 3D printing technology quite like the aerospace industry. And outside of, maybe, General Electric, no company has utilized 3D printing as much as aerospace giant Airbus. During REAL 2016, I had the pleasure of sitting in on a keynote by Bastian Schäfer, Innovation Manager at Airbus, and David Benjamin, head of Autodesk Research’s The Living studio. Together, they discussed how computer generative design helps lead to efficient design. ‘Cluster’ of LulzBot 3D Printers Reaches Milestone with One Millionth 3D Printed Part

Based out of Loveland, Colorado, Aleph Objects and their LulzBot 3D printers have been steadily wrapping their tentacles around the 3D printing community for some time now (and, as their recent partnership with OpenBCI may hint at, around our heads, as well). Their homebase, which is called the Cluster, currently houses over 140 active 3D printers that operate for over 100 hours a week, all of which are working tirelessly to produce new 3D printer parts for LulzBot 3D printers. 10DPrintives Releases the Quadra Synchronous 3D Printer

In order to make 3D printing more commercially viable, some manufacturers have been experimenting with synchronous 3D printing, using multiple print heads to print more than one object at the same time. This technology is like one I’ve never personally seen before, utilizing multiple 3D printers at once to extrude material with diamagnetic properties. Instead of using a build plate, Boeing’s technology creates magnetic fields that hold the first bit of 3D printed material (called the ‘nugget’ by Boeing) in place, which is then built upon by the multiple 3D printers involved in the process.…

How 3D Printing Keeps Jay Leno’s Massive Car Collection in Road Condition

You probably know comedian Jay Leno through his twelve years as host of NBC’s Tonight Show, but there’s certainly nothing funny about his seriously massive car collection. Leno has over 200 cars and 100 motorcycles in his Burbank, California-based ‘Big Dog Garage’, each of which is kept in driving condition by Leno and his small team of mechanics and engineers. Since retiring from the Tonight Show, Leno is now fully immersed in his car collection, and though I’m sure he takes great care of all his automotive children, parts will inevitably break and need to be replaced.…
