Free 3D Printable of the Week: 3D Printable RPG Ship

By Michael Molitch-Hou

To coincide with Tyler’s story about an impressive Kickstarter for 3D printable scenery for your tabletop gaming, this week’s free 3D printable model is a 3D printable ship from Sketchfab user VirtualBG.

After designing a potentially unprintable ship, Virtual BG reduced the details and shrank the size before creating the perfect craft for your RPG needs. VirtualBG has printed them at just 38 mm in size and now has a vast fleet for his own games.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: A Voronoi Heart

By Michael Molitch-Hou

A perfect gift for lovers of 3D printing, designer Esteban Pacheco has created a heart ornament with the indistinguishable mark of 3D printed design. Pacheco’s heart has that Voronoi style that can only be made easily with 3D printing and can only be loved the way a 3D printing enthusiast would. Print it out with soluble supports or, if you can stomach the wait, through a 3D printing service bureau with SLS. Happy Valentine’s Day!…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: Low-Poly Squirtle

By Michael Molitch-Hou

This week was the 20th anniversary of the ongoing, life-changing, critter-loving Pokémon franchise. To celebrate, here is a lil’, low-poly Squirtle designed by Thingiverse user FLOWALISTIK that you can download and 3D print at home.

And, while you’re out catching Pokémon, you should really take a look at some of the models uploaded by AranGraphics on Sketchfab.  They’ve taken some of the most popular Pokémon, as well as some Star Wars characters and whathaveyou, and given them some truly lifelike texturing.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: A Voxel Castle

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Right now, Sketchfab, 3D Hubs, Qubicle, and 3D Slash are hosting a voxel-themed contest to demonstrate the creativity that can be achieved with simple and easy 3D modeling. By submitting a story-filled voxel diorama, entrants have a chance to win 3D Hubs 3D printing coupons, a Qubicle Master license, a Parrot Airborne Cargo drone, 12 months of Sketchfab PRO, a Lego Studio box and more. Showing off just what’s possible, Sketchfab user elbriga has created this downloadable castle.

Not every model submitted to the contest is downloadable, but those that are shouldn’t be too difficult to 3D print, given the simplicity of the shapes.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: Freddie Mercury

By Michael Molitch-Hou

No one’s uploaded a great David Bowie figure to Sketchfab, so far, but we can at least pay tribute to Bowie collaborator and magnificent rock icon Freddie Mercury.  He may not have his own constellation. Instead the four-octave legend got an entire planet.  His music and persona empowered “fat bottom girls”, the LGBT community, and anyone with soul power, whether it be with the band Queen or Mercury’s solo work, including some heart wrenching opera. So, for those that have always held back tears when listening to “Under Pressure”, here is a free, 3D printable model of the one and only Farrokh Bulsara.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: The Triumphe of the Republic

By Michael Molitch-Hou

I thought that, after news of Threeding’s many 3D printable Greek artifacts that I would share a free 3D printable work of art, as the replicas on the Threeding site will most likely exceed the budgets of most folks. There are, of course, plenty of repositories for free 3D printable objects, such as MyMiniFactory and Thingiverse, that you can spend the weekend perusing for historical content.  Below, you’ll find a printable version of the Triumphe of the Republic in Paris. This printable model was created by Sketchfab user HoangHiepVu, who simplified their high-quality scan of the sculpture so that it could be 3D printed.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: 500K 3D Models

By Michael Molitch-Hou

From my interview with CEO Alban Denoyel, I learned that 3D model sharing site Sketchfab is really forward thinking, with the goal of reaching every relevant platform possible for embedding the 3D models uploaded to their site. The latest platform example is Volupedia, a mirror site of Wikipedia that Sketchfab has been using to show off how useful 3D models might be when researching topics on the open encyclopedia.

Since the beginning, Sketchfab has understood what the future of 3D will look like when everyone has access to 3D technologies.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: Yoda

By Michael Molitch-Hou

There’s a movie coming out. Not sure what it’s about, but people are pretty stoked for some reason. I think it’s about Martians. Anyway, here’s a little green man from that movie. He’s been made to take advantage of Sketchfab’s new animation feature.  He may not quite be 3D printable, yet, but it doesn’t look hard to make printable! This green fella is designed by Boris.M, who took about 2.5 hours to sculpt, pose, and texture and only 5 minutes to animate! …

Free 3D Printable of the Week: A 3D Printed Car

By Michael Molitch-Hou

Having received all of the necessary feedback from the beta tester community, Sketchfab announced this week that it would be rolling out its amazing animation feature to every user on the 3D modeling site.  To celebrate this feature, which brings animated .gifs into the 3D realm and showcases a new era for 3D file sharing, we’re posting an animation from Sketchfab user DennisH2010.

The animation demonstrates how to assemble a 3D printed car model posted to MyMiniFactory, but, more importantly, demonstrates just how such an awesome Sketchfab feature will be used more often as 3D printing, 3D modeling, and mixed reality, more generally, begin to spread.…

Free 3D Printable of the Week: Chewbacca

By Michael Molitch-Hou

A little birdie told that there’s a new Star Wars flick coming out and that they even got Harrison Ford back to play the titular role of Chewbacca. I know that most of that sentence isn’t accurate and doesn’t even really make all that much sense, but, in honor of the upcoming release of Star Wars: Episode VII, here we have a downloadable Chewbacca model.

This model was created by Sketchfab user Pixelio, associated with the recently launched Pixelio campaign on Kickstarter.…
